Types of flea markets....
Basic Flea Market
You have your basic every weekend flea market or in the west they
are called "swap meets". You set up a table full of goods either used
or new. You pay for the vendor space. Sell for the weekend. Some flea
markets you can enclose your goods till the next weekend. Often you
pay storage fees for storing your goods. Once in a while you will find
like in southern Texas flea markets that are open daily or that allow
camping on facilities. You can stay at the market with your self
contained RV and sell your goods on sell days. Have to check with flea
markets the days of operations. Most markets are open on weekends.
You need to check with your state or county on whether you need a
resellers permit to sell at the flea market. Most states allow you to
sell 3 times a year without having a permit. In most states the
permits are free to get started some charge a small fee. Some states
have city or county tax to collect also need to check with county or
state.
Indoor Flea Market
Indoor flea market of course by its name you set up indoors. A lot
of craft shows are done indoors. You set up inside and sell your
goods. You may leave your items and someone else sells them for you
like a consignment shop, or you may have to stay there and sell your
own goods. Have to check with the owner for rules that apply.
Some indoor markets are open like a store five days a week and others
are open only on weekends. Some indoor markets you get a booth you set
up your booth with your wares. Some markets are new items some
are antiques...each market kind of has its own theme. Southern
California and southern Arizona are known for indoor markets possibly
due to the warm weather. Its lot easier to shop inside in the summer
with air conditioning. All the vendors pay is the space rent and
sometimes a percentage of goods sold. Most likely indoors a
sales permit of some kind from your state or county to show that you
pay sales tax is required. Check with your county or flea market
manager for more details.
Trade Days
Southern states have what you call trade days. Most are outside or
in a Pavilion. Each Market has a certain week or days of the month
that they are open for operation. For example Canton, Texas has "first
Monday". Every month just before the first Monday everyone sets up for
operation. Vendors sell the weekend before first Monday. Some markets
give you a few days that you are allowed to come in and set up. Then
when that market is done you can go on to another market that has
second weekend. You find these type of markets in Texas, Louisiana and
other southern states.
